Košice Literary Residencies invites writers and translators of literature to apply for an open call for a month-long residency in Košice.
OPEN CALL 1: for authors
OPEN CALL 2: for literary translators
DEADLINE for submitting applications in both open calls: 20th of June 2024
The residencies will take place between the 1st of July 2024 – the 28th of February 2025. The exact dates will be agreed with the selected candidates based on their preference and the availability of the residency programme.
The selected candidate will be contacted by email. We will then publish the results on our social media.
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
) Duration of the residency: 4 weeks
) Max. Number of applicants selected for 2024/25: 5
) Location : Košice
) Deadlines: by agreement in the period 1.7.2024-28.2.2025
) Focus – Open Call 1: creation of literary works, understood broadly (poetry, prose, literary essays, long-form journalism, experimental work, theoretical reflections of literature, screen–writing, etc.)
) Focus – Open Call 2:creation of literary translations (poetry, fiction, non-fiction)
) Residency includes: accommodation in Košice, reimbursement of travel costs up to 100 EUR, a stipend to cover living expenses in Košice 700 EUR/month
) Free cinema admission to Kino Úsmev, partner of the residency programme
-)Please note that health and travel insurance are not included and are the responsibility of the resident.
RESIDENCY OUTCOME
)Work on a current writing project (does not need to be completed during residency)
)One public presentation (public reading, masterclass, workshop, publication of text, etc.)

Please attach as a single PDF document in English, Slovak or Czech language the following:
) Your contact details: name, email address, phone number, address and information on place from which you would be traveling to the residency.
) Your availability to attend the residency: please specify the calendar months you would be able to take up the residency and the dates you are definitely not available.
) A short project description of what you would want to work on during the residency (max. 3 paragraphs ideally)
) A short professional bio (1-2 paragraphs), including your publications and/or other relevant work.
) An excerpt from the text you wish to work on during the residency (approx. three A4s of text). Please include the excerpt in the same pdf file as the rest of your application.
*If this is not possible due to the nature of the work, you can send the excerpt separately or as a link (please make sure the link is active for at least 30 days). If the text is in a language other than English, Slovak or Czech please provide a translation into either of these languages, if possible, it will help in the evaluation of your application.*
SELECTION CRITERIA
)
Authors of any nationality, age, and at any stage of their career are invited to apply. We seek to provide an informal, supportive and inclusive environment to support literary work.
The projects will be chosen by a selection committee comprising members of the LRK programme team and an invited external expert (writer or literary professional).
The main selection criteria are:
) quality of the literary work and project
) the potential of the residency to contribute to the creation of the work
) the selection committee will also take into account the potential relevance of the work/project for the local context, but this is not an essential requirement.
Literary Residencies Košice is a writers-run residency programme to support the work of authors and translators of literature. The programme is the result of cooperation between the National Minorities Club Košice and the cinema Kino Úsmev. Literary Residencies Košice programme is supported from public funds by the Arts Council of Slovakia.
